National Power Portal (NPP)
A Unified Platform for Collection & Dissemination of Indian Power Sector Information
National Power Portal is one of the many e-governance initiatives of National Informatics Centre (NIC). The portal is a step towards automating various data collection processes related to generation, transmission and distribution of Power across India. It has also facilitated continuous monitoring of aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses which has led to reduction of AT&C loss.
The Central Electricity Authority is the nodal agency for its implementation. The major stakeholders of the NPP are the Ministry of Power, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Power Finance Corporation (PFC), Rural Electrification Corporation (REC), Generation Utilities (GENCOs), Transmission Utilities (TRANSCOs), and Distribution Utilities (DISCOMs).
The NPP portal has been designed and developed using open-source technologies. Email and Sandes services are used to send alerts, messages to utilities to improve and expedite the data collection/entry process. National Power Database Management System (NPDMS), a core backend system of unified NPP is used to capture online data via APIs and web enabled forms from generation, transmission and distribution utilities across the country. NPDMS is embedded with Role Based Access Control (RBAC) to provide restricted access as per role assigned to various utilities. Various APIs under NPDMS have also been published which provides important power sector information to various organizations/utilities as per their requirements. The major organizations which are currently registered to consume APIs are NITI Aayog, Ministry of Railways, and NTPC.
The National Power Portal (NPP) enables navigation through BharatMaps (Multilayer GIS platform of NIC) and visualization dashboard helps to disseminate analysed information about the sector through charts. The dashboard is bilingual and also provide different screen readers to enable people with visual impairments to access the site. Using Modems (IoT devices) on urban and rural feeders, power supply information is being pushed to the NPP without manual intervention and is being analysed and insights are published on the NPP dashboard. The dashboard also facilitates various types of statutory reports and act as the single point interface for all Power Sector Apps including TARANG (Transmission App for Real Time Monitoring and Growth), UJALA, Vidyut PRAVAH, UDAY (Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana), SAUBHAGYA, MERIT (Merit Order Despatch of Electricity for Rejuvenation of Income and Transparency), PRAAPTI (Payment Ratification And Analysis in Power procurement for bringing Transparency in Invoicing of generators) and India Renewables Dashboard.
